SUMMARY: Direct the study of ancient pyro-technology for the Archaeological Studies Program and Anthropology Department at Yale. Yales Council on Archaeological Studies is hiring a faculty research scientist to conduct field and laboratory research on how the mastery of metals, ceramics, glass, and fire itself became a critical stimulus to the emergence of complexity around the world. The Council has identified a critical need for an enhanced laboratory competence and field training in Pyro-Technology as an integrated science. The hire will be responsible for supporting faculty in the laboratory training of our undergraduates and graduate students and for the functioning of seven integrated Yale University Archaeological Laboratories (YUALs). We seek an individual with competence in a broad spectrum of analytical instruments (esp., SEM, EMPA, XRD/XRF and petrographic/metallographic microscopy) with a demonstrated research and publication record concerning transformations of a wide range of materials and soils under low or high temperature. Expected to collaborate with Council faculty on writing research proposals.
