The primary purpose of this position is to provide the services and perform the duties inherent in switchboard operations, monitoring and directing response to police and life safety communications including radio dispatching to officers for response to calls for police assistance. This position operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The Incumbent is required to work shifts, nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled. * Handles a full range of local, long distance and international calls. * Handles a variety of difficult calls requiring extreme personal involvement. * Monitors vital circuits and incoming emergency type calls * Responsible for retrieving and updating relevant information in computerized databases * Receives and compiles information relating to police and emergency incidents * Operates a variety of communications equipment * Maintains accurate radio / alarm activity records Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts / Holidays / Weekends Position Description Title: Telephone Operator / PD# 689-xxxx9A To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. General Experience: 1 year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may include: Receiving and compiling information from various sources relating to emergency incidents; communicating effectively using clear enunciation; using a computer to provide clerical support; and working efficiently under pressure of time and stressful conditions. OR Education: 2 years of education above high school level in an accredited institution. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. A transcript must be included in the application package for education to be considered. OR Combining Experience / Education: Have a combination of post-high school education and general experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Only education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level is qualifying. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
